P.O. Ackley, How Much More Velocity Can You Get?
Sunday, February 13th, 2011
It’s often said that Ackley Improved cartridges do not deliver much in the way of an improvement. That depends a lot on the choice of bullet weight and powder. Below is a chart that will give you a comparison of the factory cartridge and the Ackley case when loaded to full potential.

6mm Super Long Range (6mm SLR) or (6mm Super LR)
Friday, February 11th, 2011
Look, somebody reinvented the wheel and they call it a circle with spokes…
OK, I am being rude. But, all this cartridge really amounts to is a 243 Ackley Improved with a 30 degree shoulder. They would not interchange but they are so close it’s just plane funny. But that never stopped a salesman from going to town. I hope somebody puts this to the test against the poor old 243 Rockchucker, 243 Winchester, 6mm Remington, and all the Ackley variants. Yahhnnn!

Here is a link to a write up so you can see for yourself what I mean.
14-221 Walker
Saturday, February 5th, 2011
The .14-.221 Walker is a design of Walker Machine Tool Co. (Louisville, KY). It’s formed by necking down the .221 Remington Fireball to a 0.1445-inch inside diameter. The barrels, designed by Red Sherer had a bore diameter of 0.1405-inches and a twist of 1:8.75-inches.
As of this writing in 2011 you can get bullets in weights from 9 to 17.5 grains from Reeds Custom Ammunition
Accuracy has been reported as excellent with groups of less than one inch at 200 yards being common. With velocities in excess of 4,200 fps, the little 15-grain bullet isn’t going to take down a cape buffalo, but a head shots on a ground squirrel or woodchuck will do the trick.
Recoil sensitive? You have nothing to fear from the .14-.221 except the exceptional noise it produces. Set aside any temptation to think of this cartridge as a pop-gun, wear hearing protection.

Big Bore Wildcat Bullet
Tuesday, January 18th, 2011
These are Hornady item #5051. A lead core covered by a copper clad steel jacket. This bullet has been designed with a thicker jacket to prevent deformation and to assure deep penetration.
Let’s neck a 20mm case down to .505. There has to be a rampaging elephant somewhere who needs culling!
338, 285 Grain BTHP Match Bullet Hornady
Tuesday, January 18th, 2011
OK, I know there are a lot of long range shooters out there. If you thinking Wimbledon Cup at Camp Perry… This may just be the bullet you need. That new 338 Loud&Boomer you designed for competition needs a good bullet. The B.C. on this bullet is .720 according to Hornady (item #3339).
For you newbies, match bullets are a poor choice for hunting purposes, as they are not made to expand and deliver energy the way a hunting bullet is.
Who says a Pre-fit barrel won’t shoot?
Wednesday, November 17th, 2010
Whether you call it a 6mm Ackley Improved or a 244 Ackley improved this barrel is certainly shooting well. This barrel is a pre-fit on a Savage action. The barrel is made by McGowen Precision Barrels LLC, this particular one was made for a client of 4D Reamer Rentals LTD.
All of McGowen’s barrel are hand lapped so they have a beautiful interior finish. The advantage to a lapped barrel is that they foul less, and clean up much easier. I have found that break in is minimal and often unnecessary because the lapping takes care of the problems normally addressed by the break in process.
So, in these days when everyone seems to be looking for a bargain, Savage rifles with pre-fit barrels is a great way to continue your hobby with wildcatting and not spend a fortune. Obviously from this shooters results there is plenty of accuracy potential in the Savage platform. Also there are more accessories for the Savage action these days, triggers and stocks can be changed to improve on the looks and performance of these guns.
Changing barrels is pretty easy, all you need is a barrel nut wrench and a way to hold the action. When installing the new barrel you need the appropriate headspace gage for your barrel. Thread the barrel nut forward on the barrel till it stops, then with the recoil lug in place thread the barrel into the action. When the headspace gage is snug against the bolt face make sure the bolt handle will lift and close easily. Tighten the barrel nut, double check the headspace and your ready to go.
